"Christmas 1975
marked a major turning point in my career. My agent telephoned to ask me to go
to see a man called
George Lucas at 20th Century Fox in London. I didn't have a clue who George
Lucas was, and my agent
didn't know the name of the film involved, so it didn't seem much at the time. I
went to some rather
imposing offices in Soho Square and was made very welcome by a charming American
girl called Bunny
Allsopp, who was Mr. Lucas's secretary, and after waiting for about five minutes
in came this slip of a boy -
beard, dark glasses, looking just as if he had come down from college. This was
George Lucas.
He offered me one of two parts, "Take your choice," he said. The first was a
character called Chewbacca, a hairy Teddy
Bear of a character who goes through the film on the side of the goodies. The
thought of being wrapped up in a
great smelly costume was too much, so I asked George what the other part was.
"He's Darth Vader, the big evil villain of the film," said George. "You needn't
say anymore, George," I said "That's the part
for me." "Why are you so sure?" he asked me. "in my opinion, people will always
remember the villain," I
said. "They can never remember the goodies.""
His role as The Green Cross Code Man however is Mr. Prowse's favorite and had a huge part in cutting the number of road deaths amongst children in the UK and many other countries.
